Dr. Gloria Franco is Full Professor at UFMG since 2015 and served as Chief of the Graduate Program in Bioinformatics (from 2005 to 2009 and from 2017 to 2020) and as Deputy Chief of the Graduate Program in Biochemistry and Immunology (from 2010 to 2013) at UFMG. From 2014 to 2016, Dr. Franco acted as the President of the Brazilian Association of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology - AB3C. From 2020 to 2024, she acted as Treasurer and part of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian Genetics Society and also as Member of the Advisory Board of the Biological Sciences and Biotechnology Committee of the Minas Gerais Agency for Research Support (FAPEMIG). Dr. Franco coordinated and assisted in the organization of almost 40 scientific meetings in Brazil, most of them International Congresses and Symposia in the area of Molecular Biology, Genetics and Bioinformatics. She currently leads a research group at Department of Biochemistry and Immunology, UFMG, in the areas of molecular biology and bioinformatics. In her career, Dr. Franco published more than 130 peer reviewed research articles and few book chapters, advised more than 50 undergraduate students, almost 60 master and Ph.D. students, and supervised 20 post doctorate fellows. She works in the fields of genomics, transcriptomics (RNA sequencing of short and long reads) and proteomics of prokaryotes and eukaryotes, using bioinformatics tools to analyze DNA, RNA and protein sequences. Her more recent focus is in understanding the mechanisms underlying the expression of different transcript isoforms for protein coding and non-protein coding genes (lncRNAs) in normal and stressed conditions (disease and drug treatments) in human and mouse.
