Sobre

Ulisses Nunes da Rocha is a Senior Scientist and head of the Microbial Data Science Group at the Department of Computational Biology and Chemistry of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Leipzig, Germany, and Guest Professor of Theoretical Microbial Ecology at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. His research integrates microbial ecology, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and multi-omics data analysis to understand, predict, and potentially control the behavior of microbial communities across environmental, engineered, and host-associated ecosystems.
Over the last decade, his work has focused on the development of FAIR microbiome resources, genome-resolved metagenomics, predictive microbiology, and machine learning approaches for large-scale microbial systems. He has led the creation of internationally used microbiome databases and computational frameworks that enable the integration and analysis of hundreds of thousands of microbial genomes and metagenomes from diverse ecosystems.
His current research aims to develop “digital twins” of microbial systems by combining ecological theory, genome-centric microbiology, multi-omics integration, and artificial intelligence to predict ecosystem functions, community resilience, and responses to environmental disturbances. Through these efforts, he seeks to advance microbiology from a predominantly descriptive discipline toward a predictive science capable of addressing challenges in environmental sustainability, biotechnology, and global health.
